My conservatory collection

Post by Ospreywatcher »

Rather than post lots of individual photos I am adding a link to my Flickr page which can either be viewed as a slideshow or as individual photos which can be enlarged to show better detail.

There is nothing too exotic though I have obtained some succulents which are not always readily available.

I have no intentions of buying a greenhouse preferring to keep my collection easily manageable but I am now running out of free space bearing in mind that some of the plants will soon need to be transferred to larger pots taking up even more space!

Into all sorts of exotic plants but with only having a conservatory I prefer to buy small young plants and miniature cacti.

A lot of empty room still! Are you into bloomers more than green plants? The photos are so vivid and colourful! Are there any more on the way?

Thanks for your comment Marise, I do a bit of photography and like to get as good quality shots of the plants as I can! (tu)

Hi Oleg, although I still love my cacti and would like to add some more to my collection I have become much more selective in my purchases and have purchased some other types of succulents this year such as Euphorbias and an Adenia.

I like flowering cacti but am not really into buying hybrids purely for the sake of getting lovely big flowers. I also take shape and general attractiveness of the spines into consideration and seem to be going more for spineless or flat spined types than before.

Some of the small cacti which I started off with last year have already been potted on and I am sure there will soon be more needing that treatment, the trouble is bigger pots means less space for new additions!

Do I think it wrong that these genera demand different cultivation?

I am not even on the first step of the ladder to becoming knowledgeable about these plants. However my understanding is that Euphorbias are such a large family that no general rules can be laid down about their cultivation.

My simple aim is to provide my plants with sufficient warmth and water when required and avoiding cold damp conditions. Ask me again in a year or two and I may be in a better position to tell you if these plants can be raised alongside each other in similar conditions!
