Re: December 2012 - Genus of the Month - Conophytum
Seems everyone was all Cono'd out by the recent thread started by Hugo???
Lets see if we can get this one started.
All I can say is that after looking at that thread some super looking plants, and reading some of the comments about the best flowerings of Cono's this year I have finally decided that Conophytum has to go from my greenhouse! They just dont do well for me so they will be out next spring. Ok so I may keep one or two (I did quite well with burgeri seed and some pellucidum's) but the rest are just a waste of space.

Shame. Maybe if you persevered and learnt how to grow them properly Rob......?Rob wrote:They just dont do well for me so they will be out next spring.

I don't grow Conophytums although I have long admired them. Having read your instructions I would think about trying except for the summer rest, winter bright light regime, which in my greenhouse would be impossible as it is unheated and receives no direct light in the middle of the day in winter because the house next door shades it, and conversely, in summer it has full light nearly all day. So perhaps Rob has similar constraints.........ChrisR wrote:Shame. Although excellent, not my advice actually Heather - if you look at the bottom of the page - "My thanks to Dr Terry Smale for permission to use this growing guide."Heather N wrote: I don't grow Conophytums although I have long admired them. But anyway, your constraints are not a problem to you trying a few conos. Those conditions mentioned are ideals, but not absolutely necessary. My greenhouse sees no direct sun for 3 months from December until the end of February so they get very little or no water then. I shade it in summer with Coolglass and keep fans on for air circulation to prevent scorch. You could take them indoors on to a bright windowsill for winter.

Thanks, Chris. I am in an E-W facing home, with no windows to the South side at all, and since we had new double glazing with the wider gap, even plants that like low light levels grow towards the window at an alarming rate, such that flowering stems etiolate and have to be turned on a daily basis. My other mesembs suffer, too. I have a Carruanthes ringens flowering at the moment on a two and a half inch stem bending towards the light.
