Re: March 2013 - Genus of the Month - Parodia
I have rifled through my image archive and now present my take on the genus Parodia (note not including Notocactus). As I have said elsewhere it surprises me that Parodia are so out of fashion these days - range of sizes and spines, very floriferous (even on tiny plants in some cases) and yet some challenges for the better growers out there. Tis a fickle thing is fashion.....
Here are 5 of the large growers and none of these exceeded a 4" pot.
(Parodia names are an organised work of fiction in many cases, so I make no special claims to the names given here)

My wife likes Parodias since the flowers lasts for a long time. I have a lot fewer of them today than before, they seems to be very susceptible to RSM
Growing mostly globular, smallgrowing cacti north of Stockholm

Parodias are nice. Parodia maassii is apparently very common in habitat yet I rarely see it these days. Also when I do manage to get one it dies very soon after. I had no trouble with one I had in the 70s. I've got some seeds to try now. Meanwhile here's a couple of flowering Parodias
Somerset PhilMember of Somerset branch. I have a diverse mixture of small cacti plus a few larger survivors from a previous collection. I also like Stapeliads, Titanopsis, Anacampseros, and various other succulents. Now proud owner of many self-raised seedlings.

Hi,
I too can't understand why Parodia are considered unfasionable now. Here are some which were originally Notocacti.
Parodia mammulosa (Notocactus mammulosus) Parodia (Notocactus) horstii And finally one of my favourite plants, unfortunately the picture doesn't do it justice.
