Re: November 2015 - Genus of the Month - Small Opuntias
I have a shelf full of them. They are high up and out of reach.
Here is the first. Opuntia dimorpha.
Opuntia microdasys, the one with red gloches, it seems to be the worst from the point of view of brushing onto your skin and causing an itchy rash.
Opuntia procumbens, it falls apart as soon as you touch it, a real menace but great for cuttings.
Tephrocactus verschafeltii. The new growth is red and very attractive
Tunilla soeherensis var chilensis. It needs repotting but I keep putting it off.
There are plenty more where these come from, I will have to take the pictures first.

Austrocylindopuntia floccosa, present in Andean highlands through most of Peru, from about 7deg S of the equator through into northern Bolivia. Sometimes hairy, sometimes not. Sometimes open groups of knee-high and arm-thick stems, sometimes a tight mound of inch-wide heads. Sometimes yellow-flowered, sometimes red-flowered.
Phil Crewe, BCSS 38143. Mostly S. American cacti, esp. Lobivia, Sulcorebutia and little Opuntia

Austrocylindropuntia pachypus, another Peruvian of narrower distribution from the eastern outskirts of Lima at fairly low altitudes north for maybe 100 and a bit miles. Not much branched trunks up to about a metre. Spent flowers can produce chains of flowers or, if detached and rooted, shoots.

Austrocylindropuntia vestita, a popular 'beginners' plant' once upon a time. From the eastern flank of the Andes in Bolivia.
