Thanx Nobby.
Just for my interest: at whose discretion is it to name a new species?

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
It is the decision of those who describe the plant.
And believe me - it is not easy!

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
Just bought one of these from an eBay seller in Poland. Grafted, but I will try to root cuttings.
He has one more available if you are quick....

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
An old thread I know, but I got one of those ebay plants and I see a new growth from the grafting stock. Should I remove it? It might seem a daft question but in 20 years of growing this is the only grafted plant I have ever had.

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
How big is the nequensis as it is fine on its own roots
Maybe Nobby will comment

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
Pretty much what you see Chris. The nequensis is a single shoot only just over an inch long. I once had a cutting about this size and it took ages to root then declined, so am abit reluctant to degraft it just yet. Part of me is also curious to see what the stock is...

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
It seems to be producing shoots from several areoles, which makes me fear that it's Austrocylindropuntia subulata monstrose form. If it is, the 'monstrose-ness' may transfer into your Pterocactus, so I hope I'm wrong.

Re: Pterocactus nequensis
Hello Darren,
use fertilizer, lots of fertilizer and then cut off the upper part of the Pterocactus to root it. Leave a stump of about 1 cm - it will produce new offsets.
But remove all offsets of the stock as soon as possible.
Let Phil's idea come true - throw the whole plant away.
Much success
