I am not sure it is much different, sure there are cheat modes if you choose to use them, which look fairly good but having tried them on the odd image, you can see the difference bewtween the "aided" and manual images. It does have it's pros and cons but for someone like me with no great ambitions to be a Constable or Turner (that's I lie I would love to be able to interpret light like Turner did), it's great fun.
Pros
Cleaner
Paint is always "wet" unless you choose it not to be.
you can undo mistakes
infinite range of colours to hand.
less space needed no brushes, paints etc
Cons
It's harder on the hand than real painting,
You get lazy because you can undo or work in layers
my pad has no angle detection
looks better on screen than printed.
