When Willy dragged us back to the minibus it was another I don't know how many (but Mike might) km of rough track to the legendary Valle Botija. Sensible people camp over night here and explore the place in the cool of the morning. We had about 40 min in lengthening afternoon shadows! We had just passed a place with interesting looking plants, which I would have liked to stop at, but Willy's GPS was urging him on. When we first got out at this location I was a bit disappointed, because it looked a bit sparse and the plants looked very drought stressed, but as you took stock you realised it was another great place. I have to emphasise that this valley goes back for km into the hills, like Valle San Ramon, and we barely scratched the first few hundred metres. Anyway this is us approaching the site.

I only managed to get to grips with what I think is one species of Copiapoa here, but I think there was at least one more and I'm hoping Mike photographed that one. I did take plenty of pictures of my one species though, as there was some variation and some very nice plants. The plants I photographed are what I think is now called Copiapoa aremephiana RMF53. I will be interested in hearing comments from Benjy or Trevor on the naming of plants here. Anyway here goes and stop me if I post too many!

This is a typical clump with quite dark reddy brown spines, a few dead heads but very nice.

There were smaller clumps and a few youger plants, but I would hesitate to say they were thriving. There were quite a lot of plants in flower.
