And in the Alpine house we have Maihuenia patagonica.

I'm looking forward to my rooted cutting growing up to look like this.

Re: Kew Gardens
And following on from the wacky melocactus thread I found two more. Starting with a double cephalium.

Doesn't look very patagonica-like to me. I'd say that was standard-issue poeppigii.

Re: Kew Gardens
How about this one?
I just noticed that I seem to have slipped into the vernacular with that post.....

Re: Kew Gardens
The first one is definitely Maihuenia poeppigii. The second one might possibly be M. patagonica but I'd say its just a very old M. poeppigii. M. patagonica is a larger plant with longer less branched stems, usually fewer spines, and stubby leaves. The two lateral spines on M. patagonica, when they are present, tend to be more erect than on M. poeppigii. Also it may just be my imagination, but M. patagonica always seems to look brown while M. poeppigii is much greener.

Re: Kew Gardens
No imagination involved at all Ian, you're right - patagonica always looks slightly knackered, I think.
