Tylecodon Singularis

Post by Costas »

A geophyte from Namibia, single leaf, purple underside, velvet hairy green top and concave resting horizontally on a few milimetres high stem.I assume that the hairs filter the water from the rolling mists and channel it through the slit by the stem down the top of the tuberous root. It flowered over the last few years but the leaf never grew more than 7 cm. At the moment the leaf stands at 14 cm ie 5.5 inches and it is beginning to flower again. Is it on its last legs like its mate last year!
I would appreciate some growing tips and I would like some information where to buy any new plants and some fresh seed to propagate. Are there any books written about these plants!

Yes, there is: Cotyledon and Tylecodon by Ernst van Jaarsveld and Daryl Koutnik (2004, Umdaus Press). A very nice book with nice pictures and a lot of information on e.g. dustribution and ecology and on cultivation.

It looks good!!! (tu) I grew these a few years ago, this was an "honorary mesemb" on the MSG seed list. They do have ridiculously tall flower stalks though,
Ever hopeful, trying to grow plants from arid sunny climates in the UK!
Lithops, Haworthia, Adromischus, other south African succulents including Ceropegia and some Crassula.

Seedlings/young plants can do this. I'd rather have a happy healthy 2-leafed T singularis than a moribund single-leafer :P
They do go dormant in summer... if I remember correctly, the leaf can shrivel independently of the flowering time, so, keep watering while the leaf/leaves is/are active.

Yup, Ernst's work on this genus is up to his usual high standard.
