47th Northern Weekend 7th-8th March 2014.

Post by Dot »

The 47th Northern Weekend at Alston Hall will commence at 7.00pm on Friday March 7th and finish at 3.45 pm on Sunday March 9th 2014. We can look forward to this weekend through the long winter days and it is a good start to the growing year.

Speakers for the weekend will each give 2 lectures and are Davide Donati, who will talk about “Spines” and “The Genus Sempervivum, Witness of the Ice Age”. John Hughes “ Plants of Merida Venezuela, Alpines and Cacti” and “Back to Bahia”, Mark Preston “Cultivating Epiphytic Cacti” and “Something for Everyone” and Stuart Riley “American Travels, Nurseries, Collections & Shows” and “New Cactus and Succulent Hybrids from Around the World”.

Davide Donati is from Italy, and will be speaking to us at the Northern Weekend for the first time. He has travelled to see cacti and succulents in several countries and has spent many months studying Sempervivums in habitat, in Africa Iran Caucasus Turkey and the Balkans. He is the Editor of the Italian Journal Piante Grasse and of the new international online journal Acta Succulenta. Other first timers are Mark Preston and Stuart Riley. We are pleased to see the return of John Hughes. John spoke to us in 2004, and must have enjoyed his visit to Alston Hall, as he readily agreed to come again.

A warm Northern welcome awaits all of our speakers and we thank them for agreeing to come and give us such an interesting and varied programme to enjoy.
There will be plant and book sales together with the sale of pots and sundries plus the promise of something cactus related from Scotland.

For further details and to book a place please contact Alston Hall on 01772 784661

There was plenty of cake for those who wanted it and plenty of other good food, too. The lectures were excellent, informative, interesting and with some really beautiful slides and I can recommend this weekend as a good start to the growing year. Plants for sale, too, if you have any room in your greenhouse. Many, many thanks Dorothy for organising another great weekend, I look forward to next year.

Thank you Liz, it was a great weekend, which I very much enjoyed.

Thank you also for your offer to make the name badges for next year.

Time goes so quickly, it will soon be time for the 48th Northern Weekend which will be held over the weekend of the 6th-8th March 2015.

Will see you soon Liz, at the Hull Ferry Terminal !.
