I have a rather large agave salmiana planted out in my garden since 1992. It has reached gigantic proportions and last week showed the first signs of flowering. The original leaves are wide ( and very heavy) with sharp teeth, the newer leaves shorter, much narrower and with a serrulated edge rather than teeth.
In habitat the flower stalk can reach 7-8 metres, what will happen in Worcester Park we'll have to wait and see.

Looks great, I'm impressed that it has grown so well outside.
Do you give it any protection for winter?.

Re: Agave salmiana
It has never had any protection since planted. I have found that agve bracteosa will withstand anything the British winter can throw at it ( at least in this area) and agave filifera is pretty resilient as well. I had 2 agave parrasana that grew without any cover to flowering but a recent effort with this species was less successful. Currently agave ovatifolia, gentryi, nigra and striata are doing well outdoors.

Re: Agave salmiana
Yes it has been a very good year for them in the garden, here is Agave australis in the front garden, it has been in that position for about 6 to 8 years now, flowers most years.

Re: Agave salmiana
Jan - glad to see you made it finally! What your picture fails to give is any sense of scale - that plant is immense! I'll see if I can find a pic from somewhere with you standing next to it.
Ray - that is Yucca gloriosa 'variegata', not an agave.
