Loss of Uebelmannia Pectinifera
Sad to report my Uebelmannia Pectinifera is no more. Despite keeping him warm and cosy (well min of 10 degrees anyway) in my kitchen all winter he has keeled over. I did give some water a few days back when it was sunny so maybe that has caused it? I would be interested to hear how others keep these plants successfully please. Many thanks

Re: Loss of Uebelmannia Pectinifera
I don't think 10c would be a problem for this plant, some books say it will take 4c, my two plants have been down to 8c at least 2 or 3 times during this cold spell, but they have been very dry and in an area of lowish humidity. Also a collar of fine grit around the plant neck is always a help to keep the plant dry at that vulnerable point.

Although my plant has been down to 2 degrees with out any trouble,it is well over 30 year old. It is even growing an offset on its apex of all places. Cheers

Hi
I keep mine at about 15c but I give them a light water all winter, they have had a good drenching recently & one is starting to flower already.
I give mine quite a lot of water but these are plants I have had for a number of years now.
Ralph did your seedlings have white spines ?, even my seedlings are treated generously with water.

Re: Loss of Uebelmannia Pectinifera
It's great to hear of others keeping their Pectiniferas for many years without problems. Maybe I was just unlucky. It was a seedling about 1 inch tall & wide so maybe more delicate? I think the next one I buy I will give it a light watering throughout the winter rather than leave it totally dry or keep it in the Vitapod during the winter.

Re: Loss of Uebelmannia Pectinifera
Hi Cactus girl, you are right, a seedling will have more problems coping with different conditions of culture than a mature plant. For what it is worth my mostly mature plants are dry between Oct to March. Don,t let this set back stop you growing, it's all part of the learning curve. Cheers
