Mammillaria mimic

This Sulcorebutia thinks its a Mammillaria and has produced a nice ring of flowers

Mostly just a coincidence, since it is quite a big clump

A real Mammillaria, ring on a single head. Actually must be the second or third ring of the year, it seems to have been flowering forever.

Call it almost anything you want. It has been called S. gerosenilis and S. hertusii, and it has been lumped into other species. I like it. Here is one with slightly larger paler flowers.

Here is a close relative, S. patriciae, usually lumped into the same species as S. hertusii. They're almost identical, except the spines are yellowish and the bodies don't flush purple (in my greenhouse). The flowers on this one are a more uniform purple, but some have the same paler shading as the S. hertusii flowers.

And here is another that is often lumped, S. rauschii. Same flowers, very different body.

You really could mistake that for a Mammillaria at first glance.
