Notocactus & Parodia (scopa v rielii, tabularis and erubescens)

Post by Chris L »

I always like it when the Notocactus scopa v rielii flowers as it has irritable stamens.

Well photographed, Chris. What do you mean by irritable stamens?

If you touch them they move.

I did a video of it a year or so ago. Always worth a re-show. Click the youtube button to get a bigger picture....

Fascinating - and a bit weird.

There are a few cacti that do it, but only a few. Not all Notocactus do it either. I suppose I must have spotted it when I was trying to cross pollinate some flowers.

Lophophora williamsii shows the same stamen response. I've not noticed it with other cacti.

I'll have to try one of those next time they flower. (tu)

I am sure I've seen one of my Copiapoa's do it, but can't remember which one, even indeed if I've still got it.

Don't have one in flower at the moment to check, but I'm sure Pterocactus tuberosus also has sensitive stamens.

When my kids were younger we bought a sensitive plant when visiting the Eden Project, it did not last long I think it was over sensitive to the attentions of small children.

I grew one of these from seed when our children were small. I think I was more fascinated than they were.
