Field collection numbers

Post by Brian »

Rather on the late side but Cactus World and the seed list arrived yesterday. Which got me thinking ...

Have field collection references gone out of fashion? A lot of seeds on the list have location details ( but plenty do not have) but no collection references.

Field numbers have become sensitive because it is now almost impossible to do any legal collecting, even of seed, anywhere. So maybe just collections long ago by Ritter, Cole, etc. get any mention. Population localities are more useful than numbers because the same population can be sampled time and again with some enthusiasts thinking that each number represents a different entity.

Many of the items are from Milan Kůrka and that's just how he chooses to pass them on.

And names are less likely to be mistyped while typing, compared to numbers. It is much easier to make mistakes in numbers without being noticed.
