Sulcorebutia zavaletae

Post by habanerocat »

I've been looking for Sulcorebutia zavaletae for a few years now without success. This is to replace a plant I lost.
I know it's true name is probably canigueralii but this does not match the plant I had.

I've attached two photos. The first is a plant I got in ELK, but this is not what I'm looking for.
ELK Sulcorebutia zavaletae.jpg
The one I want is the second photo which can be found by googling Sulcorebutia zavaletae '139'.
I don't know what '139' means.

I've also tracked down an MC6142 from Succseed which is never in stock.
1273-Sulcorebutia canigueralii 'zavaletae' MC6142 (N Sucre, 2000m, Bol), many small heads! 10-7 SEK* * OUT OF STOCK *

That field number should I think be CARD 6142. Martín Cárdenas.

So I've gone down a few holes and came back up. That's when I come on here.

I'm beginning to think that my original plant wasn't zavaletae at all and that the ELK plant is true.
So I think my question is, what is the other zavaletae '139'?

Any ideas where I could source some seeds?
I think this a very unique plant and was obviously one of my favourites.

It's the second time this has happened to me. :D

I suppose you saw that picture in my Flickr account, or maybe in my blog. The '139' you mention is my own reference number in the database (actually, a simple Excel worksheet) where I keep my plants' records. I can tell you about that plant that I bought it on eBay in 2007 from a seller called "Pricklylady", probably from the UK. It came with no other reference other than the name. It's an easy plant, so I probably have a few spares. Please send me a PM so we can figure out a way of getting one to you, if you can't find it locally.

Mmmm, just thinking there now.
What should I call this sulcorebutia when I get it?

According to rebutia.sk, S. zavaletae is a "proper" species, but all photos I can find do show a plant with smaller heads and a lot less tight spination. :\

So, after having a good look around over the last few days I think the white spined zavaletae above is most likely a form of crispata. If I ever track down a field number I'll post it.
