I rescued these from the remnants of very little left at Roy Mottrams place. His son was kind by letting me take what I wanted. Sad to see the state of the place now, decades of work gone. Such is life I guess. The tall one was in a seed tray where it had been for many years, roots growing into the bench covering.
The smaller on has a very faded label with only the starting letters Opu visible (Opuntia?) Two other stems were rotten but this one is fine, I think!
Any help in identifying these plants will be appreciated.

Re: Identify please
I think the small one is opuntia vestita.
They have nasty spines when the wool develops.
The larger one might be Eulychnia, possibly a form of acida.
Just a guess, but it's very variable.
Not half as nasty. What you see is what you get.

Re: Identify please
Or Opuntia (Austrocylindropuntia) subulata? I'd expect vestita to be wooly.
Nothing to add for the other one.

Re: Identify please
Hi Ernie;
The first one is certainly an Eulychnia, but without going out to the greenhouse in the morning and checking,. I would say a very dry E. castanea.
The second one as Mike says is A. subulata

Re: Identify please
I still think it might be vestita, that for some reason hasn't developed the wool yet.
You'll find out soon enough.
Vestita will remain small and branch a bit.
Subulata will take off like a rocket and become too big for most greenhouses.
Vestita is also hardier.......

Re: Identify please
Are you sure you are not thinking of Opuntia verschaffeltii? That seems more likely than vestita.

Re: Identify please
Today I picked up another three nicely growing and clean specimens at Roys. Clearly Labelled as Opuntia subulata. I will post a picture when I get time later this evening.
