Discocactus from National to ID

Post by DavidI »

I was wondering if anyone was able to ID the plant in the picture from the National Show so that I can add it to a forthcoming video. I think it's a Discocactus but that's a genus that I have no experience of at all! Thanks!

Hi David,
Its me, the label I have for it is discocactus nigrispinus ( maybe) unless anyone knows different.
I did have some new labels I did for the National which got forgotten in my bag & went home again to be found after the event so it might not be you but me

Hi Tina,
I'm not aware of the species nigrispinus, the nearest is nigrisaetosus Buining and Brederoo, but I know very little about this genus (other than having Buining's book!).
But your plant, whatever it might be, is a fine specimen. (tu)

Hi Tony,
The maybe may have been me trying to decipher the existing label, I seem to struggle finding a decent site for discocactus identification,
While you have your book out I also have this ugly grafted beastie that has no label, I'm going to try de-grafting the offsets next year .
Any idea please ?

Hi Tina,
I am not a Discocactus expert, having only one plant, but the heads of your clump do look the same as mine, which came with the label D. griseus. This is considered to be just a form of the variable D. heptacanthus, so maybe the latter name would fit yours?

Thank you Phil and great stuff mal,
must admit habitat photos versus cultured plant photos aren't always the best to compare.
