Hutchison Borzicactus/Cleistocactus

Post by Phil_SK »

Anybody any ideas what this is? It came from Abbey Brook last Summer. The label reads as follows:
"Borzicactus hutchisonii nom. prov.
PH205.01 Very rare plants discovered by the late Paul Hutchison but never described. To be published in CSSAJ in" before it runs out of space.

I've had a rummage online for various combinations of hutchisonii with Borzicactus, Cleistocactus, Loxanthocereus and Clistanthocereus to no avail. Clearly, if this was published it wasn't done so using this provisional name. Anyone recognise it? It's closest to what's now Cleistocactus fieldianus or sulcifer or one of those types, I'd guess. I've never seen a list of PH numbers but I imagine it dates from a collection in the 1950s or 60s, possibly. It might provide a location, which would be nice if anyone has a list.

Paul Hutchison collected in both Peru and Chile I believe in either the 1960's or 70's. He was part of the T. Harper Goodspeed expedition to collect Nicotiana's (wild tobacco plants) in S. America along with Rodolfo Wagenknecht of Chile (commemorated by Neporteria and Copiapoa wagenknechtii).

Hutchison never got around to publishing some of the plants he found. I had his accession card looked up at the University of California Botanical Gardens where he worked for a time because I was interested where his "Nechilenia napina v. floccosa (lanigera)" was found that was distributed under that name but never published

The above plant was recently described as Eriosyce napina ssp. riparia by W. Machler and H. E. Walter in Cactus World Vol. 24, No. 3, Sept. 2006 p142. During our discussion I passed on the information to H. E. Walter that the UCBG gave me and he mentions it on p. 143. At the time a group of us were discussing by e-mail what Ritter's T. tenebrica and T. fankhauseri actually were and came from. The herbaria are usually very obliging, as an instance the Natural History Museum in Chile took the preserved Ritter types of T. tenebrica and T. fankhauseri out of their jars and took digital photo's for me.

I suggest you e-mail the UCBG and ask them what details they have for "hutchisonii" quoting his collection number. Though I have many collection numbers I am afraid I do not have Paul Hutchison's and I am not sure they were ever generally published. There is an e-mail facility for the UCBG right at the bottom of this link ("Email your website feedback or suggestions") If you click on that link and ask your question there I am sure they will pass you on the the correct person who will know:-

Hi Phil,

I was going to suggest the same as Dave. Contact Dr. Brent D. Mishler, the Director of the University & Jepson Herbaria, and ask him about the collection PH205.01 - if there is a specimen deposited in the herbarium, he will be able to give you the details. See his contact information in the page:

http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/people/mishler.html

Another option is to contact Dr. Paul Licht, Director of the UC Botanical Garden:

http://ib.berkeley.edu/research/interes ... person=124

I also tried the search page to see if this collection was listed, I filled only the collector's name field of the form with 'Hutchison' and restricted the search to the University and Jepson Herbaria and UC Botanical Garden, there are 585 collections of Hutchison, some of which are Borzicactus, however when you click in 'view details' the field number is not provided, only a Catalog Number.

If you want to search yourself, below is the link to the search page:

http://bnhm.berkeley.edu/query/index.ph ... d=complete

Cheers,
Marlon Machado.

I have a plant with the same name, Phil, with a Graham Charles collection number GC608.02, and which I'm certain I bought from Graham a couple of years ago.His list from which I bought it says the location was Chachapoyas PE, and describes the plant as "Pink flowers on small plants. Not yet published".

I have no doubt that Graham can tell you more.

Evidently we are able to update this now since it was published in Bradleya 28: 3 (2010) by Graham Charles.

I should really have updated this when I fould out more.
Firstly, PH 205.01 is a Paul Hoxey collection, not a Paul Hutchison number, and is from the same location as the GC plant that Graham Charles used as the type in his 2010 first description.
I did get in contact with the herbarium and, despite the slightly wild goose chase I'd started with my incorrect reference, I received a detailed reply and an image of a herbarium specimen that the guy thought was most likely to be a match - he'd clearly made more than a cursory search. I no longer have the jpg (or email) sadly but I'm pretty certain it was this - now available online! https://webapps.cspace.berkeley.edu/ucj ... =UC1338128

In 2012, I accidentally bought another specimen of Borzicactus hutchisonii, also PH205.01. Top tip: take a list of which plants you already have with you when you know you're likely to encounter cacti for sale! The two plants have grown steadily, branching from the base occasionally, but the older stems eventually give up and need to be removed. Neither plant has ever flowered, though I thought one day I might be able to produce seed, having two clones.
During this last winter, my greenhouse (which I usually aim to heat to +1C, though it swings a few degrees above and below that) got down to about -2C for more than the usual on/off heater cycling time, and one of my plants didn't like it. Can you tell which one?
