LED Growlights 2023

Post by Stevepeat »

I have recently finished my improved LED light enclosure. It is the way it is because of serious space constraints and occupies a shelf over the TV in our living room!
It has been built mainly from reclaimed materials.
Each level has a Helios XP 120 (45 x 120 coverage) 100 watts dimable LED growlight.
A Garland watering tray (117 x 40 x 4).
A variable speed computer 12 cm fan.

The bottom level has a 50 watts Root!t horticultural heat mat (40 x 120) which will be thermostatically controlled. This is not currently being used.
I also have a temperature probe on each level.
The structure is designed to maximise airflow to and from the enclosure.
Extruded polystyrene sheets (6mm) from B&Q provide reflective material on all sides not painted matt white. I have hung sheets of this behind the blackout blind to maximise light.

Looks really interesting. Where did you purchase the Helios from, and how many lumens are hitting the top of the plants?

I bought the lights through a UK group buy, but you can get them directly from Andrei Nitu.

I need to measure the light intensity properly. For the Helios you can use a cheap light meter which has been calibrated for use with them.

I think it is about 20k lux for 7 hours a day.

How hot does it get inside? As I understand it, the fans draw air from the room, and exhaust it into the room. I have a similar set-up, but have to draw air from outside in the winter (and exhaust it to the outside). The whole contraption can only function when it is no warmer than 0C outside, otherwise plants get very hot. I like them at 20C. Also, my computer fans did nothing for air movement. I tried a few different fans, and settled with a fan from a window air conditioner unit.
