Aloe vera

Post by Eric Williams »

My youngest daughter and I disagree regarding the above plant. She said it was bought under the name barbadensis, so it must be correct. Internet pictures show a different plant altogether.
Just wondered if there is a grower out there who can put a picture of the real one on the forum.
It’s a big ask too. Thank you.

A. barbadensis is a synonym of A. vera.

There is a wealth of nonsense talked on the internet about these plants. Advice to reproduce them from leaf cuttings, magical healing and dietary supplement properties, etc. A pedantic insistence on incorrect naming is the just one of many sins.

According to https://www.ipni.org/n/530015-1, a description of Aloe vera was published by Linnaeus in 1753, whereas Miller published A. barbadensis in 1768. Aloe vera therefore takes precedence.

A picture of a plant by a grower would suffice. Thanks

Hi,
I thought I read that Aloe vera covers a range of plants all of which do have healing use, but perhaps mostly for burns (it worked for me with a solderig iron burn, but perhaps the thick cold sap was soothing and dried over the burn protecting it), but there again I may be wrong...
