I think the other replies were not saying it doesn;t need water, just that lack of water is not the root cause of it narrowing at the top. Such narrowing is referred to as "etiolation" and is caused by lack of light. This may be the result of moving it from a bright situation to a darker one, or watering it in winter when there is little light (especially in winter)!

I'd suggest
- put it on the brightest windowsill you have
- water it once a week (with a weak feed) from about April to September
- leave it to go dry in winter to give it a winter rest..

Hopefully this will help it too recover.
