They tend to trawl through websites looking for email addresses, then look for associated ones on the same site. They then select what they consider the senior account, for example CEO or chairperson, then send ‘can you do me a favour?’ to the other accounts they’ve found.
Precisely the reason why all of the email addresses on the BCSS website are masked. The "can you do me a favour?" email is one broadcast by a bot to hundreds or thousands of emails at a time. The spam filters at the BCSS mail usually filter them out, but they have been coming for a few years.

They'd have to have hacked Bill's account as the emails are sent to all on his contacts list and would only work if sent to those who know Bill as they're 'personalised' to make you reply by pretending to be from someone you know., The replies would go to an account that has been set up to look like Bill's account. Sadly some people do reply to these emails, there's not enough warnings around.

I don't generally get spam - and if I do it goes in the spam folder. The only spam I get like this "can I ask a favour" is from people connected to the BCSS.

I've found the emails in my deleted folder and checked the "raw messages" and Bill has signed off as BILL, exactly has he had done so in real emails to me.

It really is weird, and lending more to a hacked account again.
