Chamaelobivia 2024

Post by edds »

Got off to a cheeky early start thanks to some overwintered buds in my office.
Chamaelobivia 'Edith' was in flower today.
CH 'Edith'
CH 'Edith'
CH 'Edith' whole plant
CH 'Edith' whole plant
'Lincoln Tango' is only a few days away from starting flowering too.

All those Chamaelobivia cuttings you give me last you edds. Have got lots of little red dots where buds are forming.
Thank you once again and pictures later of flowers

That's a superb flower shop.
The season has started????.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

That's quite a display you are getting indoors.
Do you give a cold rest or stop watering over the winter to trigger flowering?

They get no water from a couple of weeks before the Christmas holidays until a week or two after but are watered a little for the rest of the winter. The room gets down to 8-10 during the Christmas holidays (and some cold nights when the heating isn't on). It's got a full glass roof so it's more of a heated conservatory than truly an indoor space.

Interestingly some hybrid cultivars are definitely more eager to flower in there than others. I have similar sized 'Lincoln Whirlwind' that is showing no flower buds yet.
I find hybrids are generally better than straight species though.

I have three big Aylostera plants in there. The 'Celebration' flowers well each year, I get a decent flowering on the 'Apricot Ice' but the muscula only produces the odd flower - I think they would all benefit from a.colder winter rest.

Allowing the plants naturally to take advantage of adjusted climatic conditions.
