(Sowing) Where do you put the organic part in a pot: on top, in the middle or at the bottom?

Post by yonnoy »

Hello, I am about to sow new cactus and haworthia seeds.

I will use 80% inorganic part and 20% organic but I am hesitating about where to put the organic part in a pot: on top, in the middle or at the bottom? (layers)

I think that in nature the "organic part" is at the top and I can reproduce it. Do you have experiences on this topic?

It surely wants to be all mixed together as if you have layers in your pots the water might not transfer between them properly.

When I used to grow seeds (mostly cacti) I used 50 % John Innes compost and 50% molar clay (cat litter or oil spill granules). That went in a small pot, several in a plastic bag until they had germinated.

I did a short guide which you can download here: https://manchester.bcss.org.uk/guides-more/

Other people have other methods of course - there is no right or wrong way to do it (well, nearly so).

Definitely mix the compost thoroughly before sowing.
