Grafting advice

Post by Eric Williams »

I would like to have a go at grafting some cuttings of my monkeys tail cactus ( botanical name too long to print lol). The scions are about one half inches long.
Any ideas on holding scion to stock tightly without damage. Thank you.

I'm trying .... with success ..... a narrow strip of clingfilm ... seen on a US YouTube
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

As said various ways, you can use rubber bands, weights or even cling film depending on the scion shape.

But why Eric? Monkey tail grows very well on it’s own roots.

But Why ? Many years ago I saved a Mamm. Theresae by grafting it. This all happened when I knew absolutely nothing about grafting and in a state of panic during Winter. Ever since I have kept some stack for grafting.
Last year I decided to cut up my three foot long monkeys tail plant, to start anew this Spring. Being I had some stock and scion I just thought I would try my hand on one cutting. I agree this plant does grow well on its own roots, and I also know grafting is not everyone’s cup of tea. Cheers ps thanks for the tips.

You can bet your bottom bippy (that dates me) that the grafting of something you want to save will fail, whereas the grafting of something for fun or practice will succeed.
