'Queen of the Night' cactus ID needed

Post by Victoria »

Hi all,

I bought this cactus as a rooted cutting a couple of years ago and can only remember it being sold as 'Queen of the Night' so I asummed Selenicereus grandiflorus. However I have since bought some cuttings of Selenicereus grandiflorus and it looks rather different.

So what have I got? or is it just a bit variable?

Thanks for any insight.

Could be anything from an Epiphyllum hybrid to a Hylocereus (though don't know any that spiny) to maybe even Strophocactus (Deamia/Selenicereus) testudo. I think unless it was from a very specialist grower of jungle cacti the first is likely.

Hmm, guess I have to wait for it to flower. I am annoyed I have lost the label, but I guess it happens to everyone once in a while.

Just Google "Queen of the night" and you will find mant plants have been given that name. Thats the trouble with common names, you end up with lots of plants under the same roof. Almost as bad as Echinopsis I seem to think! :-))

I had a brainwave! I bought this using Paypal and have the date in my database so looked it up in my Paypal past history. It was sold to me as Hylocereus undatus, and although the spines threw me apparently leaf structure changes with age. Just googled some young plants and it looks correct.

Mystery solved.

I think loads of people are sprouting the seeds from Dragon fruit and selling them on eBay. Should've guessed.
