Terrific pics Trevor of a wonderful looking place. Thanks for sharing them as I'm always inspired by pictures of outdoor plantings.

Wonderful pics, Trevor, many thanks! I'm sure we're all envious of the outdoor plantings, couldn't do anything quite like that here! The nearest is around the Mediterranean - some nice plantings there!

Thanks again, Trevor, for sharing your Cactus and Succulent experiences with us. Absolutely terrific photos and wonderful scenery. I particularly loved the Ferocactus with those red spines. Where is Iann? He's missing those Lithops! Never mind when you are 89, maybe yours will be as good. Mind you, you might have to go and live in Australia
Obsessive Crassulaceae lover, especially Aeoniums but also grow, Aloes, Agaves, Haworthias and a select number of Cacti.

Trevor, another thought. Those cacti growing so well outside on the hillside, is there a danger of escapes and the whole of Australia being over run with strange species? After all it has happened a few times before-look at rabbits and toads etc.I still love those Lithops and the Ferocacti and the white cacti, were some Mammilaria?

Hello all, thanks for the comments !

First off, for Lindsey. - The umbrella's were in fact for rain. Adelaide had it's first decent rain since December on the weekend of the conference....figures!

The featured talks were:

Steve Hammer - "New and Old Novelties from Namaqualand", "Snow White and the Seven Hundred Dwarfs" (Conophytums mostly), "Haworthia Cultivars for Fun and Prophet" (His spellings not mine!)
Len Newton - "Recent Discoveries in East Africa", "The Genus Sanseveria"
Woody Minnich - "The Bolivian Highlands", "Socotra, an Island in the Arabian Sea"

Local Speakers were:
Attila Kapitany - "Collecting and growing trials of Australian native succulent plants"
Max Holmes - "A new look at Echinopsis Hybrids"
Frank Kamei - "Grafting"
Bob Chinnock - "Some hidden treasures in London - the collections of Carl Linnaeus and Nicholas Brown"
Gavin Hart - "Madagascar - the hottest of the world's biodiversity hotspots"

Stuart, yes you would need to be pretty brave to plant out Opuntiods in Australia. They're not all classified as weeds, but they do all get tarred with the same brush I'm afraid...

Devrim, the main garden at young husband was started in 1970. It was a holiday home so was only worked on when the owners visited. They say that most plants were planted as seedlings or cuttings, some from seedlings as small as 2" across.

Colin, I don't think Kim was there - it might have been her parents talking about the next Conference in Penrith I think. Can't really recall what photo's were used....sorry. Hope it works out and we do get to meet...

Liz, there are a number of Cacti that are illegal to grow here in Oz. Mostly the invasive Opuntia's. I think there is another list of a 100 or so that are listed as having "Weed Potential" and will no doubt be declared noxious weeds if the ill informed have their way. There are a great number of Genera that aren't even allowed to be imported into Oz due to being tagged as weeds - Cleistocactus, Stenocereus, Lophocereus and Armatocereus for example. I can really see us being over run by Armatocereus 8-)

Oh!! Not outdoor gardens surely :tweed: Herbarium specimens? Book illustrations? (RHS Lindley Library?)
Maybe you Aussie folks can enlighten us locals!
Ever hopeful, trying to grow plants from arid sunny climates in the UK!
Lithops, Haworthia, Adromischus, other south African succulents including Ceropegia and some Crassula.
