Thanks Liz....it is remarkable, I agree. Especially at 1200ft on the edge of the Pennines. But I probably just have a very hardy and wet tolerant clone and put it in an ideal spot in the garden.
More down to luck than any skill on my part I think.

Looking quite copiapoaesque, G. castellanosii 'boszingianum' P205
An old plant, dichotomously branching, of G. castellanosii P80
I've taken quite a shine to G. castellanosii ssp. ferocius, and have acquire three, as plants or seeds: GN 91-395/1307, GC952.02 and Tom450.1
Hopefully, they'll get more ferocious as they grow older.

The spines on Gymnocalyciums can be unbelievably ferocious. You have shown us some great ones here Phil, I can understand your passion.

Probably a good point at which to re-mention
www.schuetziana.org as their latest edition of Schütziana was published the day before yesterday and is available to download.

I know it's gone a day over the month but I thought I'd just add my small number of Gymnocalyceum.
One of them I saved(baldianum) from our local big warehouse store with artificial flower on it. I teased the flower of with a small screwdriver and it seems to be growing nicely with new spines from where the flower was stuck on.
The others are just in the mood for opening their buds and when they come out later I'll take some more photo's.
