Many of these winter growers don't use the water-wise but slow CAM for growing. Instead they use the profligate but fast C3 metabolism in winter and in summer they shut down to CAM idling with their stomata closed 24/7 to save water. That's why some of them can seem to be incredibly thirsty in winter, its because they are :)

Excellent and interesting plants.
They're very rewarding: when nothing else grows, they come into action.
Like Ian says, they can be very thirsty.
I treat my mitros in winter as swamp plants.
I think it is virtually impossible to rot them, in winter of course.
