a decade with gymnocalycioides

Post by pijaya »

Although the Euphorbia flowers are no where as splendid as the true Gymnocalycium, these spineless beauties make up for it by geometric shape and white body patterns on some specimen.

Below is the same plant looking back in time. It is now my largest plant that is on own root.

At this is recent. this time of year is the mating season for these plants

The seeds are easy to set and germinate, but hard to maintain as young seedlings. I need to be very careful this year as I have failed many times.

new and more beautifully patterned variety from Negele population, Southern Ethiopia. these seedlings from The Netherlands are growing well with lots of potential

and another plant decide to compete in blooming at this time of year. this is E. horwoodii.

too bad only one is blooming. But it is ok since I know "pollen in the fridge method":D

WOW !, BEAUTIFUL and I'm suitably envious::o.
Only one of my E gymnocalciodes flowers yearly so no seed, the seed/flowers look really good.
They do grow OK ( a bit slow) on there own toots so I wonder why we get offered lollipops so often, I managed to degraft one of mine last so was quite happy.

Fingers crossed with the E horwoodi flowers, is your plant grafted ?. I have just gotten some seed of this so wonder if I will need to graft it to keep it going ( especially in the Uk !)

Magnificent, Pijaya! Like Tina, I am very envious too! I've got one E. gymnocalycioides on its own roots, about 5cms across, and was very annoyed to lose a nice seedling 2 years old the other week. I do have a couple of seedlings sown last year, and am wondering whether to graft them, though I'd prefer not to!

Add me to the list of the envious...what a great collection of E. gymnocalycioides! And your E. horwoodii is spectacular too.
