BCSS Branch table shows

Post by Lindsey »

Does your BCSS Branch have table shows?
If not, why not? Too small, or ...???
If there is one, do you enter? If not, why not?
Is there a particular cactus/succulent genus for each meeting?
If so, how do you know which this is?
Who first explained to you (or, who explains to new members) how the table shows are run?
Who judges your table shows?

... those kinds of questions... I like to set people thinking :P
Ever hopeful, trying to grow plants from arid sunny climates in the UK!
Lithops, Haworthia, Adromischus, other south African succulents including Ceropegia and some Crassula.

We (High Wycombe Branch) do have table shows,
We'e not big, but nOt too small, 10-15 typically attend.
We have three sections, a cactus genus or group, a succulent genus or group, and one plant in flower.
I try to put something in the cactus class, and the plant in flower class.
It's in our programme.
You sort of pick it up, or ask the show secretary who organises each table show.
Usually its the speaker who judges.

Well we don´t even have a regular branch here in Stockholm, there is a loose bunch of us,but we do exhibit once a year and that is at a big garden exhibition in spring where we try to not only show our plants but also try to educate people in caring for their cacti and succulents. We also sell some surplus plants. We very seldom get new members, but we try,we try. Perhaps this year will make a change !:chat:
Thord. All kinds of smallgrowing cacti.

Hi Lindsey
Yes
*We have specimen cacti &/or succlent unrestricted pot size.
*a particular cactus & succulent genus for each meeting?
*3x cacti &/or succulents
It was in the schedule that they used to give it
No one- I'm psychic too.
Mostly the speaker.

Even if I don't have a particular genus it's handy with the specimen plant as you can always take your latest favourite to show off.
We don't have that many people that enter just the same group really but it's nice having a mooch when you are drinking your tea.
Tina

varied collection of succulents and cacti but I especially like Euphorbia's, Ariocarpus and variegated agaves.

Glasgow branch meets monthly from September to June and has a 'Plant of the Month' competition - one cactus class and one succulent class and the same for Novices (those members who have not won a trophy). In June the points are added up and two trophies are awarded for the exhibitors with the most points. Plants are usually judged by the visiting speaker, otherwise by an experienced branch member who has not entered any plants.
The class requirements are in the branch/zone syllabus.

The only exception to our monthly meetings is October when we have our branch Autumn Table show (5" pot restriction), a closed show of 32 classes. A show schedule is handed out the month before. A judge is invited and 4 trophies are awarded.

At our December meeting, a social event, we have an additional competition, the 'Artificial cactus or succulent competition' where members bring along a homemade plant. Anything goes and witty uses of invented nomenclature always goes down well. Judging is very democratic as everyone has a secret ballot for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

If new members are able to find their way to meetings they have sufficient 'psychic' abilities to work out the routine. Normally the chairman tries to enthuse the members to bring plants each month. For our annual Summer show and Autumn table show it is usually up to the show secretary!
Especially interested in Mesembs. small Aloes and South African miniatures and bulbs.
