Greetings from Shetland

Post by Dunlin »

Dear All,

I've popped by this forum now and again, but thought it would be friendly to introduce myself at last...

Recently my childhood/teenage passion for cacti has really started to obsess me once more. So my circa 25 year old specimens are getting more attention again, I'm starting to get ideas of new species I'd like to try, and of course, I had to rejoin the BCSS after an absence of around two decades. I was delighted to have my old membership number reinstated! Growing cacti on a windowsill in the far north of Scotland has its challenges, but my little collection has flowered profusely over the years. I am very fond of Mammillaria and Rebutia in particular.

Best wishes,

Naomi

Belated welcome Naomi. Impressive how you manage to flower your cacti on the windowledge. I am impressed at the fact that you have had some plants 25 years; lot of repotting over the years & no doubt some have become bigger than your windowledge.

Hijacking this old thread to ask - are there any active forum users from the Shetlands, Orkneys or other Scottish islands? I'd love to see or read about what I imagine to be the most challenging conditions in the British Isles in which to grow C&S.

There are four (at least?) members in Orkney, now part of our branch (Grampian) following the demise of Highland branch. I'm sure there are more C&S growers too that we haven't found yet ;)

That's interesting Paul, thanks. The longer daylight hours in summer must be a big advantage, but I'm assuming the longer winter nights aren't so bad since the plants will be in dormancy? Or am I oversimplifying it?
