Iann. I would say your plant looks like T. rinconensis ssp. rinconensis with those spines, while I think Rod's plant looks more like T. freudenbergeri with those very long dark centrals, which has now been placed in rinconensis and is listed as T. rinconensis ssp. freudenbergi.
Whatever the names the two plants are beautiful and a credit to you both.
Iann. 3  you cannot be serious , come on Iann get those Thelocactus seeds sown

Picture from 2015 showing the spines better in relation to a flower. It has spines and they're pretty long but somehow doesn't look as vicious as yours.
Mine is in a 15cm pot and the long spines are 5cm, Ian. Your flower does seem larger than mine, even though mine won't open fully due to the spines fouling the blooms.

Thanks for the info Ray. I didn't realise there was a subspecies so will now do some research on it.

freudenbergeri has purple / magenta flowers so its not that

Just a form of the very variable rinconensis

The longest spined form I have has spines around 8 inches

Yes, I read that rinconensis is very variable in form and spination, so mine is a "straight" rinconensis.

I bow to your greater knowledge Martin.
My freudenbergeri, though a good sized plant has not flowered for me yet.
How many days a year is your National collection open to the public.

Unfortunately I am not able to do public open days due to limited space.

I have done BCSS open days the past three years for the local zone, we had about 50 last year which was a bit tight.

Visits by arrangement are possible at certain time
