The Autumn Cactus and Succulent Show at RHS Harlow Carr on Saturday 23 September 2023 - schedule available

Post by TraceyM »

The Autumn Cactus and Succulent Show at Harlow Carr is on Saturday 23rd September 2023. All BCSS members will get free entry to the garden on the day.

The schedule is attached as a pdf and is also available to view online here: https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/harlow-carr-schedule/

The show has 57 classes, including educational, collection and display classes, all with different judging criteria with the aim of giving as many members as possible the opportunity to enter. There is also a class for cactus and succulent themed arts and crafts, which will be decided by a visitors' vote.

We will also have 4 non-competitive displays of plants, which members are also invited to bring along a plant for. The displays will show what can be grown in a greenhouse, as a houseplant, outdoors all year round and outdoors for summer. Find out more about the plant displays here: https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/plant-displays/

There will be a large sales table, where all exhibitors and volunteers can sell plants.

We will also have a free plant activity for children visiting the show. Our volunteers are currently growing hundreds of Aeonium plants, and young visitors will be able to repot one of these, add gravel and a label and take the plant home with them. Find out more here: https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/plant-activities/

The Autumn Cactus and Succulent Show will be held across the 3 rooms of the Bramall Learning Centre, a modern eco-friendly building with a Sedum roof. For show entrants, there is easy step-free access from the car park for the staging of plants. Find out more about the show on Bradford's website: https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/branch-show/

RHS Harlow Carr features a range of planting styles including woodland, prairie, streamside and kitchen gardens, with the Sub-Tropicana Garden likely to be of particular interest to BCSS members. This is planted with a range of colourful Aeonium and x Mangave cultivars each summer. A new cactus bed is being constructed in the Alpine House this year. You should see a good selection of hardy succulents and South African bulbs on display here during September too.

Please send in your entries by Sunday 17 September. I've attached the entry form to this post (the show schedule is attached to the previous post), or it's available to download from our website. https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/harlow-carr-schedule/

There is free entry for all BCSS members to Harlow Carr.

We have been busy growing 300 Aeoniums so children can pot them up, write a label and take them home free of charge. Some of them are huge already!

It is the closing date for entering the show today, although our show secretary, Sue, has said she's happy to accept late entries, so if you've forgotten you're still welcome to send it in! https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/harlow-carr-schedule/

You can also display your plants in a non-competitive setting if you prefer: https://bradford.bcss.org.uk/plant-displays/
