when mice get peckish- mesembs

Post by Tina »

I did say I have some ugly plants, these poor lithops etc had just recovered from last years damage & a huge mouse managed to get in again and have some snacks. I did 'get him', ( magpie food) and found that the greenhouse had flopped off the slabs making an entry point, its a very old third hand greenhouse. I could replace it but it seems such a lot of work, moving plants , pots etc & then getting Baz to take old one down & put a new one up I would not be popular.
I wouldn't mind an ID for this one, its a very odd colour

I once had a Crassula suzannaea eaten by a mouse who also took all the tufts off a Lophophora to line his nest.

I'm advised by an expert that the best/most effective "diversion" or bait is crunchy peanut butter. Don't use the BEST or TASTE THE DIFFERENCE type products .... elcheapo works best
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

If only he/she had just stuck to nibbling one plant, but it never seems to happen

From the inference, I would imagine that the animal had "good taste" and nibbled the choicest, rarest and most expensive specimens.

Oh dear, Tina! At least they will produce new leaves next year. I think your ID is Lithops ‘Hammeruby’ the red form of L. meyeri.

it definitely did as it seemed to be mostly the coloured lithops that were nibbled, ignored my dorethea's-green n brown.
thanks Diane, its very unusual looking, will be lovely if I can get a clump,
