Cleistocactus winteri ssp colademono

Post by Ali Baba »

If you’ve had your copy of Cactus World this month you can’t have failed to notice the picture on the front cover of this splendid plant.
It’s a very white spined and red flowered specimen compared to the various plants that I have grown from seed over the years. All the plants I have grown have been yellower looking due to the prominent spines, and have orange red flowers. Seed has come from various sources.
Is the plant pictured a particularly fine clone (in which case I hope it has been propagated and spread around), or have I been raising hybrids?
I don’t know if Peter Berresford is on the Forum, perhaps he can elaborate about the origin of this plant?

I find the newer stems on mine look that white but they get yellower as they age. It's in my office so I'll take a photo next week.

Mine too but never as white and hairy as that one. How is the flower colour on yours?

Yes I would say identical too, definitely not the orange red flavour of mine!

Mine's big enough to send you a cutting if you're in the UK?

Mine is definitely red. Seed from Mesa Gardens some years ago.

I was sent a rooted cutting which grew into a good sized plant, but then rotted at the base. However all of the stems that seemed rot free simply refused to root and gradually withered away. Has anybody else has trouble rooting these cuttings?
