Fascinating, Martin. I did once plant a pad of an Opuntia that I secreted back from Zion National Park, it lasted a couple of winters, didn't grow much, and then rotted the next winter. But I didn't prepare the beds in any way like this chap is recommending.

It is very interesting, especially the species he grows.

Interested to see flowers on one of the Opuntias. This site is one of the links on the Glenhirst site, which also has some pics of outdoor plantings of cacti in the UK

Try

I'd seen these websites before (I'm the Phil who commented in George's guestbook). The original version of George's website is worth a look too http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/hardycactiuk/index.htm as it has pictures of the beds he grows his plants in, which have not been added to the new site.
Ralph Martin's site isn't working for me this morning but I recall that he has only planted his garden this summer gone, so it should be interesting to see an update in spring. His nursery http://www.cactusshop.co.uk/ (which also isn't working for me today!) has a good range of hardier plants for sale.
