I would always advise that succulents are grown in a highly inorganic compost, basically 50/% compost %0% grit. With this sort of mixture(including for seeds) I have not had any problem with these pesky flies.

Thank you for a very informative amount of information. I have been puzzling how to get the best out of my plant and killed one in the process. I have another, which thankfully I should be able to care for better, now.

I would add Echeveria prolifica. It grows like fury and lives up to it's name. I kept mine dry but outside all winter and I put some in my rockery, in the C&S section, with 80% grit, it survived that and has flowered this year. Crassula sarcocaulis is hardy in sheltered conditions. I kept mine o...

I agree Pachyphytum compactum. If in doubt check out the International Crassulaceae Network. It is the best source of identification of Crassulaceae that I know. It can be slow to navigate but makes up for it by more information http://www.crassulaceae.ch/.
