Hello again

Well, I'm not new, but have just managed to log into the forum for the first time in nearly 3 years (was getting instant "Forbidden - you do not have permission to access this page" - a different message to just the result of getting username or password wrong). Thanks to membership secret...

Re: Aloe polyphylla germination

Glad some people now have Aloe polyphylla seedlings - I'm not sure whether we have any reports about the seeds from the December 2019 BCSS list (other than my own experiment). It's now 28 days since I started soaking 50 seeds (from the 2019-collected seed which went to the BCSS, and with which I sta...

Re: Aloe polyphylla germination

Next photo in my series of Aloe polyphylla germination. This is the same germinating seed as seen a few messages back in the thread (2020-Jan-27). It's now 3 days later (2020-Jan-30) so after 13 days since submerging a batch of 50 seeds in water. The root has extended, and the first leaf (just looks...

Re: Aloe polyphylla germination

Well the first Aloe polyphylla seed has germinated. As promised here's a photo. If you've forgotten by now, this is 50 seeds from the batch which I donated to the BCSS December 2019 seedlist. They've now been soaking in rainwater (straight from the water butt) for 10 days at about 18 degrees C and i...

Re: Aloe polyphylla germination

Hopefully I'll take some photos of germinating seeds & small seedlings when/if my test batch of 50 seeds start to germinate. Some things that have been mentioned in the thread: Scarifying (sandpaper etc.): as described on my site, when I first grew Aloe polyphylla (seed from Alan Beverly in Cali...

Re: Aloe polyphylla germination

Evidently both Mike and I donated Aloe polyphylla to the seed-list - I wonder if the batches were mixed together, or whether each packet would only contain seed from one batch? Anyway, of the 50 seeds from my batch, which I started soaking on 17th Jan 2020, 48 had sunk after 3 days. Now awaiting ger...

Aloe polyphylla germination

Thought I'd start a new thread rather than tacking on to some mention of Aloe polyphylla in an otherwise unrelated thread. Some forum members probably know that I've grown Aloe polyphylla outside in pots in the UK (near Cambridge) since around 1996 (smaller ones kept inside if hard frost likely - wh...

Re: Conophytum burgeri pods

I started with one plant of Conophytum burgeri - I think it came from Tom Jenkins' "Jumanery" nursery, so that would date how long ago this would have been (1980s maybe, even 1970s?). When it was in flower, I loaned it to branch member Doreen Oakman for cross-pollination with hers, which w...

Re: Massonia outside

I'm a bit surprised to see that too! I grow Massonia pustulata in pots, and I have them outside whenever I can in the growing season (i.e. winter in the UK) - they easily get etiolated (leggy) inside where it might be too warm or have insufficient light. But I find that the leaves aren't frost hardy...

Re: Aloe polyphylla

Hi all - I don't often log on here, but was just checking out what's been said about Aloe polyphylla. I see a reference earlier in the thead to my page about A.p., and someone asking what became of the Aloe plicatilis/polyphylla 'cross' I mention on there. I guess I should update the page (later: I ...
