I have a suspicion it may be the software which folk use ... camera ... cellphone .... post-process .... etc.
I have tried downsize on a previous part downsized image to find the forum does not accept it .... but an image fully downsized in one go .... was ok.

A few Gymnocalycium plants and you have a full season of flower interest.
As for "dark smudges", under UV light, they glow in shades of red. (Sorry to be scientifically boring). In IR light .... more interesting still .....
