Re: Cactus seedling turned white!

I also have a mammillaria carmenae that has done this. It's also like a skin, wouldn't come off too easily when I tried to scrape it (the side of a needle wouldn't work, but tweezers did), and I damaged the plant a little in the process  The most popular suggestion when I asked was that it was ...

Straightening a top-heavy mammillaria?

Last year I took some cuttings from my mammillaria schwarzii, and most of them look like they're going to flower soon  However, two in particular (which don't have buds) are very top-heavy, and even though I regularly rotate them (they're grown on a windowsill), they're leaning quite a lot. So...

Re: 'Scale' on mammillaria?

Thanks everyone for the replies - I've tried scraping some off and it doesn't come off too easily, but when it does it seems to be fine underneath, just has a 'fresh plant smell' for want of a better description... The tubercles are fairly soft though, and difficult to reach, so it's easy to scrape ...

Re: 'Scale' on mammillaria?

Thanks everyone - I've tried to take some better photos so hopefully these will be a bit clearer, but it's quite difficult to get a focussed close-up shot through the spines. The scale covers a substantial amount of the main plant - more than I'd originally realised. It hasn't flowered before but ha...

'Scale' on mammillaria?

I have a mammillaria carmenae which has what looks like some sort of scaly substance on and between the tubercles (photos attached). Does anyone know what this is, what causes it, if it's a serious problem and how to treat it?

Re: ID and pointers?

Quick update: after a few more searches online, I put it in a tub of water to soak for 30 minutes as a bit of an experiment - within a couple of days the larger one in particular seemed to have really filled out. Two weeks later with some good sunlight it's looking even better!

Re: ID and pointers?

Thanks both! I've had them for a couple of years now and they haven't really grown at all so I'll try planting them a bit further apart and see what happens. Soil in the third photo is a shop-bought cactus mix - I've repotted since then anyway but my other plants seem to be doing fine with it!

ID and pointers?

Could anyone let me know what this is please? The smaller one is starting to turn purple-ish and the bottom of each is a bit shrivelled (I watered it last week) - is this a sign that something is wrong or is it quite common? It's in the sunniest window I can manage! Flowers are from last year :)

Re: Help needed - Mammillaria Schwarzii

I agree with everything Aiko has written. It is very etiolated due to lack of light. To show you how it should look, I'll show you my very old plant, which is grown in full light in my greenhouse. Unfortunately you won't be able to replicate these conditions on a windowsill.image.jpg Also Diane, th...
