Re: Cacti identification thread

I appreciate this forum as a tool for identifying unknown purchases. I posted a picture the other day of 4 new pots containing 5 plants and the replies were all very helpful considering as has been mentioned in this thread, some might be known as different names. For example one of my purchases was ...

Re: Can anyone identify?

Food for thought, my books have little info about Wigginsia but an online search showed a few which I would agree are definitely 4b. Now to find which variety
Thanks for posting.

Re: Can anyone identify?

I try not to use google images, the number of obviously wrong images is always very high. I have 4 decent books but not quite up to date and I use Llifle.com a lot but they seem to be having server/bandwidth issues. I find nothing really beats a fellow grower who says "I have that" whether it be a p...

Re: Keeping my cats away from the plants

You could try the carrot and stick approach, only works if you are in the room but it might 'condition' their behaviour. Carrot = small laser pointer to distract them when they go near, good fun! Stick = spray bottle with water, good aiming should chase them. We used this method to stop one of ours ...

Re: Can anyone identify?

Thank you for the suggestions. Pot 4 is two different plants. The one on the left as suggested initially by Diane, I now believe to be Echinopsisis eyriesii (not a Mamm. as I originally thought)the one on the right I still can't determine, I'm thinking might be a Ferrocactus (histrix?) it has very a...

Re: Can anyone identify?

Thanks Diane for posting. I thought no.3 might have been a Euphorbia because it has 'real' leaves but I've never seen one before so now I can broaden my search. I'm looking at a book right now, you are spot on with M.madisonoreum, what a variety difference from almost no spines to very spiny. Thanks...

Can anyone identify?

Hi, I purchased these small cacti and wondered if anyone can assist with identification especially number 3 of which I've never seen anything like. I've tried to identify but come up with the usual problem that most books and web pages have pictures of mature not juvenile specimens. I thought:- 1- F...

Re: Help with I.D please

Thanks Stuart for your reply, it does look closer to Cereus forbesii than to any other Cereus I've checked, although the descriptor for forbesii says usually six ribs and this has four. I often find when looking for i.d. I get a bit hung up on exact numbers of ribs and axial/radial spines and I've w...

Help with I.D please

I am trying to positively identify some of my cacti, any suggestions welcome. They are at least 25-30 years old, probably underpotted and neglected through ignorance. Of course all this will change now I've joined the BCSS  The single specimen I think is Pilosocereus pachycladus but I don't ha...

Re: ID on a Lidl cactus

I got a Lidl purchase recently and I'm sure its a Melocactus broadwayi. It has a lot more ribs than my matanzanus, either way it is a good size and price
