Re: Pest control

I've seen the odd tiny mealy adult as well. I assumed this was that they were just under stress.

Re: First flowers of the year

It does seem to be one or other of the true Rebutia that flower first. I've got a R. minuscula indoors that is flowering now. The rest generally follow on a couple of weeks later. I grow these plants where they only get modest amounts of sun- they flower well but spination does not look anything lik...

Re: Chamaelobivia 2024

That's quite a display you are getting indoors.
Do you give a cold rest or stop watering over the winter to trigger flowering?

Re: Sulcorebutia crispata seed germination

I let the temperature drop ~10oC at night, so it goes much lower than 15oC at night.

Re: First flowers of the year

Is it R.marsoneri that gives the earliest Rebutia flowers or is there a Rebutia or even Aylostera that flowers earlier?

Nice looking plant. Presumably you started watering a while ago?

Re: Sulcorebutia crispata seed germination

Have you watered the pot now?
I find seedlings can take ages to recover from rest. Once they start growing can't you just give them a bit more water
than for more established plants?

Re: Seed germination

I put a layer of fine gravel (not sand) around the seedlings after germination when they're still in bags. I wait to do this until it looks like germination has finished. The gravel discourages moss growth and apparently reduces the risk of damping off. It also gives the chance to give some extra su...

Re: Kew's Tree of Life

An interesting issue for me will be how gene trees align to the species trees from the nuclear genome sequencing data. The technical paper below lays out the issues quite well. Copetti, Dario, et al. "Extensive gene tree discordance and hemiplasy shaped the genomes of North American columnar ca...
