Re: Examples of indirect sunlight

The concept of "bright indirect light" is one of the mysteries of the plant world.

If you start your seeds on a windowsill, one tip is to stick a piece of white A4 paper to the window behind the tray of seedlings.

Re: Hardy Mesemb hybrids

Amazing flowers. I was recently reading this Scottish Rock Garden Club article about Aloinopsis hybrids: https://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/logdir/2019Feb211550781214IRG110.pdf (pages 81 to 97 of the pdf) I have already sown some Aloinopsis spathulata seeds this year so when the Mesemb Study Group 2nd ch...

Re: Sempervivums in early spring

The Sempervivum 'Gold Nugget' starting turning a lot more red after taking the photo. It will be interesting to see how it changes through the year. In photos it is often shown as a lime green colour but I haven't seen it like this since I got it.

Re: Sterilisation of compost?

We sterilise compost in the microwave for sowing seeds. A couple of years ago we had a big problem with fungus gnat larva hatching in the compost so that's why we sterilise it now. We never really have a problem with fungus, mould, etc.

Re: Sempervivums in early spring

They look great. I have some in smaller pots that can fit on my plant shelves to keep the rain off, and they look so much better after winter. I will have to try and protect more of my plants next year. This is one that has done particularly badly before when rained on in winter, but it has lost few...

Re: Local branch- brilliant night

I think it sounds like a great idea for a meeting and I'd like to see something similar too. How many and what classes did it have?

Re: BCSS Seed List December 2021

I planted most of the winter-growing succulents this week and I have seedlings of Aloinopsis and Crassula already. I bet more will be up when I check tomorrow. Aloinopsis is not winter active. Well, maybe in habitat, but up here you can (more) easily grow them in spring, summer and autumn. I keep m...

Re: BCSS Seed List December 2021

I'd read that Pachypodium seeds are very short-lived so I decided to plant half the packet of geayi now in case they weren't still viable when I do most of my seeds in April. I put them in water and they quickly swelled up, so it looks like they all could germinate. I don't usually use a heated prop...
