Horrible name but equally horrible spines - hence the name, I assume. I had one years ago but it was very prone to mealy bug attack and I eventually disposed of it when we moved house.

Lovely flowers, Juster. You're not alone with late flowering plants. I have a Stenocactus coptonogonus which has 6 buds that have been threatening to open for weeks, but I think it's the generally cold weather that is holding them back.

This has been my experience too. I've never lost a seedling in a moss covered pot, and I've had a few over the years. Damping-off is the real killer of seedlings.
