Re: Cotyledon orbiculata

I looked at my specimen of this. It is rather pot bound although in a 4 1/2" pot and does not look like it will flower this year alas. Yours is flowering in advance of my other Cotyledon orbiculatas, but my greenhouse is rather cold over winter. It does give a little longer growing season for these ...

Re: How hot do cacti get?

I think reaching 48C is concerning, since this is only April and there is scope for another 15C rise in outside temps at the peak of summer. I'm not sure what to make of the variation in the results, but more could be learnt by investigating further. The approach should be to try and separate heatin...

Re: Pelargonium petroselinifolium

The flower looks a bit odd, but then it is as yet a small plant. See:

Re: How hot do cacti get?

Very interesting thread! I would like to see comparisons of the effect of different coloured pots please? I have long thought that roots can cook inside dark pots and need to be shaded in a greenhouse. Sinking clay pots in a substrate was common practice in spacious Victorian greenhouses, but that w...

Re: Water moisture monitor

I simply look at the potting compost around a plant to see if it is wet. If you don't use any grit top dressing, then dark potting compost is obviously still wet. A few days after it turns light in colour and watering can be considered again, since lower parts of the pot will then be becoming dry. M...

Re: What happened here

Isn't the answer here in the photo? It looks to me as if the rot entered the plant body via that dead flower? It should have been removed last October. as I must do each year for Adromischus flower spikes.

Re: Zone 6 Convention NW London Sunday 5th Sept 2021

Arrangements for buying tickets are likely to be similar to last time: https://forum.bcss.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=167866 Please do not just turn up on the day - catering has to be ordered in advance from the University and we need to know numbers attending in advance to make detailed plans for c...

Zone 6 Convention NW London Sunday 5th Sept 2021

Our convention last year was planned for September, but regrettably had to been cancelled. Zone 6 is going to try again this year on Sunday Sept. 5th 2021. As usual it will feature three top presentations, c&s plant sales and a light lunch all-inclusive with tickets sold in advance. Since it is bein...

Re: Othonna Appreciation Day March 5th

Handsome species Othonna cremnophylla. Tina, pls tell us how you set seed - or is it self-fertile? The first of my Othonna is showing yellowing of the leaves and I expect the others to follow by April. I suspect we may be talking about different plants in different situations. I'm not thinking terms...

Re: Othonna Appreciation Day March 5th

I too grow a modest number of Othonnas and have been trying to name the numerous habitat photos in iNaturalist, the citizen science, natural history, photo gallery. Like mine, your plants are looking a bit droopy and starting to think about shedding their leaves. I water freely through winter, even ...
