I find Copiapoa roots are excellent like yours Ian or they have little or none at all, there seems to be no middle ground I've found.

The Cereus in picture 3 is Cereus validus and the colour is fine don't worry about the spines it will be OK. The Cereus in picture 7 is either Carnegiea gigantea or Pachycereus pringlei only time will tell but I would go with C. gigantea.

I think you will find that it is Tephrocactus alexanderi , the form that is sometimes called var.bruchii.
Do they tear open when a new shoot appears ? I can't say I have noticed this but it could well do and that areole does look as if it is sending a new segment up.

I think it is M. platyacantha because I can see cross banding on the spines which would identify it as so. Hickenii does not have that marking.
