Re: Pest control

A handy tool in the battle against smaller bugs. Gives you both hands free.

It’s an eye loupe holder.

Re: A slow start

Constant rain and dreary days here in the west of Ireland.
I've only watered last years seedlings.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll do some watering if I can get the lawns cut.
Let it bee is only an excuse....

Re: Pest control

I'd imagine the fibrous root hairs would be lost on most plants over the winter and the first light watering would spur these back into action.
So the second watering would be best for absorbing insecticide.

Same with feeding. We've always been advised not to feed on the first and last watering.

Re: Sulcorebutia crispata seed germination

I let the temperature drop ~10 o C at night, so it goes much lower than 15 o C at night. I have my seedlings indoors so this is relatively easy to achieve. Thanks, I read that first as -10C on my phone but now on the PC I see you mean 10C approximately. Looks like a min of 10C would be good alright...

Re: Pest control

Has anybody ever used an air-compressor to blow off insects from plants? Sounds like a plan, but where do you blow them off to? Does this work in practice or just help to spread them around? I've using this over the winter when the plants are dry at the root. I de-pot them, take them outside to the...

Re: Sulcorebutia crispata seed germination

What's the lowest temperature you'd dare let your newly planted seeds drop to at night?

I've turned off night time heating but there's frost due this weekend.

Re: Recording of The Cactus Hunters: Desire and Extinction in the Illicit Succulent Trade by Jared Margulies

I picked this up again a while ago and gave it my best shot, but dropped it again as soon as my journal came through the door.

I'd hate to give any 'cactus' book a bad review but I'd have to agree with Colin Walker's assessment in the journal that it's 'heavy going'.

Re: Re-potting and itchy eyes

I don't know what's causing it.
I just use John Innes and grit which is kept outside. So the mix is damp enough and not much dust about really.

It's a bit better now. Might have been something else.
Thanks for the replies....
