Re: Tylecodon singularis advice request

Looking very healthy and impressive, Mike. I'm trying to stick to admiration without envy creeping in. I followed the previous instructions for my plant about waiting for leaves to start growing in August, but nothing happened. The corm/tuber seemed firm. So come late September or early October I ...

Re: Winter is coming

There are actually 2 imbricata plants in the pot, Ray. One I grew from seed, it spent its first few years with winter protection; the other was acquired when a friend tired of it growing outside in his garden. Many years of being completely unprotected. They survive it rather than flourish in it.

Winter is coming

The flower buds on Crassula tecta give a warning that winter is coming. They were right. This was the view from the window this morning, looking down at the garage roof. Some of the Opuntias and Echinocerei in the cold frames look to have a coating of snow. The hardy Sedums have somewhat more, as ...

So it's monoecious not dioecious like many Euphorbias. Do different plants give you male and female flowers at the same time?

Not one I've grown, Tina, but it looks as if yours is a male, in which case you need to find him a female companion.

Well done to Simon and everyone else responsible for organising the event.

MatDz wrote: Wed Oct 23, 2024 8:15 pm How deep do you sow the seeds?
About 4-5mm below the surface. The caudex is maybe partly below the surface in the first year but clearly above after this without me doing anything to adjust it.

Re: dioscorea elephantipes

I've always found that with Dioscorea elephantipes seedlings the caudex naturally develops on the surface, and doesn't grow below the surface. As it grows, it develops a (more or less) flat face resting on, not below, the soil surface. I haven't successfully germinated other Dioscorea species, so ...

Conophytum obscurum has pink/prurple flowers Mike. I didn't see this at he time! Can you email me the photo please? The yellow flowered one is the bilobum photo - the captions relate to the following photo. I've emailed you the one that I have as obscurum (better definition than the forum version)

Yes, even without any attempt at pollinating. I've had the occasional fruit, which Suzanne describes well, and they've germinated to produce seedlings. I must follow Suzanne's advice and see if I get a better pollination rate.
